I loved the City Hopper ride on the Brisbane River. It's free, and the boat comes every 30 minutes. Gave me a basic idea what Brisbane is about as a tourist with limited time and resources, and whatever places I wanted to explore further, I could hop off and walk around more.
Definitely Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) at Southbank - they always have great exhibitions and the Children's Gallery offers great hands on, interactive fun.

The river from South Brisbane through to Kangaroo Point has a huge range of free activities.

There are several art and heritage walks in the area including Secrets of South Brisbane, Reflections on the river and Art and the River Trails. You can follow the various trails from South Brisbane all the way up to Kangaroo Point, Across the river and back to Queensland University of Technology.

South Bank is a lovely place to explore. Have a swim and a barbecue for free.

On hot days you can also cool off in one of the Art Galleries or Museum at the Culture Precinct.
The tour of the newly renovated City Hall and a visit to its clock tower. Both can be booked through the Museum of Brisbane, 3rd floor, City Hall.
